The talent behind the curtain
Decadent, caviar-draped creations fit for the Queen. Feather-light pastries that wowed Julia Child. It’s safe to say we’re more than a little proud of the culinary team we’ve assembled at Kimpton Sir Francis Drake Hotel. Get to know Justin Deering and Kimberly Bugler, the talented toques behind Scala’s Bistro and Lizzie’s Starlight Room.
Justin Deering, Executive Chef
A veteran of the San Francisco and Napa Valley restaurant scenes, Maryland native Justin Deering’s culinary vision guides the menu at Scala’s Bistro and Lizzie’s Starlight Room. He developed his creative approach to French and Italian cooking at Napa Valley’s Tra Vigne, and went on to cook at some of San Francisco’s most noted establishments, including Cafe des Amis and Doc Ricketts. In 2008, he opened his own Mission District restaurant, Conduit, before joining the Kimpton family as head gastronome at Kimpton Sir Francis Drake. “I’ve always been into depth of flavor and making dishes multi-dimensional – creating a result that’s plated with care but not pretentious,” he says.
Kimberly Bugler, Pastry Chef
Kimberly’s story is a sweet one. A talented pastry chef who graduated first in her class at The French Culinary Institute, she went on to work at storied establishments such as New York City’s Maxim’s, Marriott Marquis and American Park at The Battery. She found herself in the limelight, being featured on shows like the Discovery Channel’s The World Culinary Olympics, TLC’s Extreme Weddings and the National Pastry Team Championship broadcast on the Food Network. In 2010, Chef Bugler was named one of the Top 10 Pastry Chef’s in America. The frosting on the cake – a chance to cook (three times no less) for the legendary Julia Child during her 80th birthday celebration. With a little luck, you’ll be next.
